Critical Thinking Questions (2011/2012)

In October, we created a recipe for helping with critical thinking questions. Here are some of the steps and hints the students identified.

Answering Critical Thinking Question

Understand the Question
– highlight
– underline key words
– harder words; try to find a word you can substitute
– reread the question
– work through the parts of the question
– ask MP
– slow down, stop and think

Restate and Answer
– take words out of the question for the restate
– reread question to make sure you have the answer
– break the question down (if longer)

Proof and Support
– 3 proofs (when you can)
– always goes back to the question
– no more “the text says”
– quotes or you can use own words to explain your proof
– proof + personal support
proof + personal support
proof + personal support

Conclusion
– relates back to the question and your answer
– don’t copy the restate; adjust the words
– use strong words
