We had loads of learning one day in October (and some laughs too!) when the Grade 8s put themselves in the shoes of people around the world who don’t have easy access to water. It wasn’t too long (or should I say “it wasn’t many metres”) before they realized that transporting water is quite a task!
I had the 8s haul water about 50 metres (they could choose the bucket size). They couldn’t believe the weight of their water buckets AND how quickly they became attached to every drop of it. I had to remind them to not chastise the ones who were spilling (they were REALLY getting into it, and very PROTECTIVE of the water!). 🙂
Throughout this unit, their learning will continue with a look at the differences between their home’s access to water and homes across the globe. You can read some of their thoughts at these blog pages. Enjoy.
