Summary summarization

20120905-200622.jpgWe’ve begun studying The Hunger Games as a part of our first novel study.  In addition to that, we’ll also be reading the novel, The Giver (by Lois Lowry). Both of these novels look at the complexities of organized societies in the future and will provide the students with the opportunity to make connections to the world we live in today. We’ve already been asking deep questions about what’s right and wrong in these novels. Some of their thoughts have really surprised me too! They’re thinking about what they are reading and feeling emotionally connected to it. (I love that!). For the last two days, we’ve worked on summarizing. Students reviewed the guidelines for a summary and practiced writing summaries for the last two chapters. Tomorrow, they will have the opportunity to independently practice summary writing. On Friday, we’re going to move on to new concepts in the novels. I will keep you posted!
